How Does Our Summer Staff Get Trained?

One of the most frequently asked questions at Camp Bernie is, “How do you train your staff?” Parents are often surprised to hear just how extensive the training period is for our Summer Camp staff.

At Camp Bernie, we take the training of our staff very seriously. After all, we want to provide our campers with the safest, most enjoyable camp experience possible! Overnight camp staff is trained for 7 full days - essentially from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. each day. Similarly, our day camp staff receives 4 full days of training. Among a broad array of topics, the following details are highlighted in our training sessions:

  1. Our Directors spend considerable time on the subject of “Caring for Kids”, ensuring that the staff is fully aware of nurturing behaviors that are crucial to the well-being of our campers. These skills include behavior management, bullying prevention, friendship building and many more.
  2. We welcome in guest speakers and experts in the field of youth development to enlighten our counselors on the work they will be doing with kids. In the past, we have hosted authors, child psychologists, teachers, college professors, educational administrators and - perhaps the best experts of all - parents!
  3. Critical certification courses that must be completed are administered, including lifeguard and CPR training, first aid training and archery instruction.
  4. A number of required online training courses are conducted in advance, through partnerships with the American Camp Association, the YMCA of the USA, and our insurance providers. Our staff participates in virtual training regarding waterfront safety, child abuse prevention and blood-borne pathogens (among other topics).
  5. During staff training, critical drills are conducted to ensure that our staff is familiar with the protocols necessary in the unlikely event of an emergency over the summer. (Thankfully, our annual staff “missing person” drill is the only missing person procedure our counselors have ever experienced!)

Of course, not all staff training days are this serious. Our counselors have to be trained, but also should be equipped to provide campers a fun and exciting experience! Countless songs, skits, games, activities and traditions are taught and enjoyed, making staff training a week that all of our counselors enjoy.

Each year, we refine our training programs to fully prepare our staff to deliver entertaining programs and the quality child care that parents expect. We are confident that our staff will meet your expectations, and your children will be in great hands during their stay at camp.
