Once again, YMCA Camp Bernie is proud to be working together with USA Immersion to bring foreign children to our summer day and overnight camp programs. This will be our second year in partnership with USA-I, an American not-for-profit organization that offers international students a complete immersion in the language, educational system and social and cultural networks of the US.

The mission of USA-I is to foster a better understanding of the US abroad and to bring the world closer to local communities in the US by guaranteeing language and cultural immersion, fostering innovation and creativity and giving fervent attention to consistency and detail in their service.

Our Adventure Day Camp and USA-I are proud to offer area families the chance to participate directly by hosting a child for three weeks. The exchange student would spend two of the weeks attending YMCA Camp Bernie’s Adventure Day Camp along with the host family’s child at no cost. The third week would be spent with the host family, enjoying American culture and life.

According to Belen Millan, Director of USA-I, “hosting an international student provides the American family a unique glimpse into another culture's customs, habits and ways of perceiving the world around us… It's a great cultural eye-opener for the entire family”. American teens who participate in a host family program often find themselves more aware that we are all part of a global community, more accepting of people from other cultures and more interested in what's happening in other parts of the world.

Ultimately, these programs are about bonding our campers with children from around the world. Millan says, “American teens who have participated in this program often feel that the few weeks spent with their international students are the highlight of the summer, and in many cases these bonds that are formed can last for many years”. Spaces are still available for the fellowship in 2012, feel free to contact the YMCA Camp Bernie office for more information.
