Before & After Care
The Advantage Before & After School Program will assure your child is safe and supported. We operate in a way that considers the care, welfare, health, and safety of all the children in our program. Our staff will encourage your child’s growth and development during the before & after school hours, from 7AM-6PM, for children grades K-8 in the Lebanon Township School District.
YMCA Camp Bernie is contracted on an annual basis by the board of education to operate two state licensed child care centers within the Lebanon Township school district buildings of Woodglen Middle School and Valley View Elementary School. To learn more about state licensed child care centers and many other policies pertaining to children, please visit the Department of Children and Families at http://www.nj.gov/dcf/.
Any child attending school in the Lebanon Township School District, in grades K-8, is eligible to apply for the before and/or after school program. Enrollment can be on a drop-in basis, or from 2-5 days per week, for both before school and after school care. It may take up to 5 business days from the date we receive the enrollment packet for the child to be able to attend the program.
The Advantage Program is currently supervised by a state licensed child care director, with a 4 year university degree and ten years of experience at YMCA Camp Bernie. The coordinator and the support staff must all have cleared background checks, fingerprints, and medical clearance to work with children in accordance with NJ state licensing standards. They also receive 10-20 hours of training every calendar year in the areas of Child Growth & Development, Positive Guidance & Discipline, Health & Safety Procedures, and the CATCH/Healthy U curriculum. We have staff at each site who are First Aid & CPR certified.
The ratio for our child care program, in accordance with state requirements, is 1 staff for every 15 students, where 2 staff members must be present in a group of 6 or more children. There are typically 2 staff on site at the Early Care Program and 3-4 staff on site for the After Care Program. YMCA Camp Bernie does not provide one-on-one services.
The YMCA Camp Bernie Advantage Program, in partnership with the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, participates in the Healthy U and CATCH Kid’s Club program with the goal of reducing and preventing obesity in youth. Over 370 YMCA afterschool childcare programs have implemented this curriculum into their daily program impacting approximately 18,000 youth and their families. The program curriculum is delivered to children during the afterschool care hours. Children experience moderate to vigorous physical activities and weekly nutrition lesson and activities. The philosophy and goals are to promote and educate while creating an environment for healthy living. The program also provides support to families for making good choices and lifestyle changes. For more information on this program, visit the CATCH website at www.catchinfo.org. To learn more about the Healthy U initiative, please follow these links to the NJ YMCA State Alliance Healthy U webpage as well as to the Healthy U Facebook page.
In both Before & After school care, children rotate through periods of snack time with food provided in accordance with USDA guidelines, quiet choice activities, structured physical activity, homework help, arts & crafts, and free play both indoors & out.
We offer discounts for siblings enrolled full time in either early or after care or both.
