Counselor in Training
YMCA Camp Bernie’s Counselor In Training program provides teenagers with exciting opportunities to build character and self-esteem. Participants develop communication and leadership skills through team building exercises and hands-on training with staff members in our program areas and cabins. Successful completion of a YMCA Camp Bernie leadership program is a fabulous accomplishment for teenagers to list on job and college applications, and is a wonderful first step in seeking employment as a counselor at our camp in future summers.
This 4 week experience guides kids entering Grade 11 through the transition into becoming future camp counselors, while still enjoying the fun and excitement of being a camper. Our CITs play a significant role in leading our spirited and caring camper community, and we teach them the best practices of successful camp counselors. Enrollment in this program is limited and requires an application and interview.
Two CIT Directors are hand-picked to facilitate this program and mentor the CITs. They are pre-screened and trained roles models who teach and exemplify the values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
There are 4 sections of the CIT program: Service Project, Adventure Trip, Lifeguard Training, and Mentoring. Participants in this program will be certified as American Red Cross Lifeguards with successful completion of the Lifeguard Training.

Counselor in Training
New for summer 2016! Campers entering 10th or 11th grades in the Fall will qualify to apply for positions in our Day Camp Counselor in Training (CIT) program. These week-long sessions align with our traditional Day Camp weeks, but differ each week by content. Whether your campers come one week, or many, our CIT program will keep them engaged and learning important skills for both succeeding in camp as a counselor and succeeding in today's job market. CITs will have opportunities to shadow the age groups and activities that most interest them, as well as participate in camp service projects and specially designed trainings. Training topics include customer service, appropriate use of social media, behavior management, diversity, resilience building, interviewing skills, resume writing and more. Each week differs, so not all campers in this program will have the same experience.
