YMCA International Camp Program The goal of the International Camp Program (ICP) is, to impact a young person’s life while making a difference in the world. It provides an opportunity for personal growth, and builds leadership skills. Participants gain self-confidence, and independence. The Ridgewood YMCA has been involved internationally since 1966 when campers from YMCA Camp Bernie went to Puerto Rico.
The program is designed to include five important components:
- Youth to Youth Interaction:
Campers interact with the youth from Reynosa, Mexico through Faith Ministries, and youth through the Dominican Republic YMCA.
- Host Family Experience:
Mexico participants share two dinners with a local family. ICP DR participants share accommodations with DR Leader Club members.
- Community Service:
With Faith Ministries participants build a house for a needy family. In the DR campers build houses and paint a YMCA school.
- Educational/Cultural Experiences:
Participants gain an appreciation of other nationalities, cultures, history and geography through a planned itinerary.
- Team Building:
ICP campers develop important team-building skills at YMCA Camp Bernie prior to departure and throughout the journey.
